Description
One tradition in Ecuador for the beginning of the New Year is to make, or buy, an effigy of a person you dislike, or a cartoon character, whatever. Dummies and masks are for sale all over the towns and cities shortly after Christmas. You make a list of all the bad things that happened to you in the previous year and stuff it inside the dummy (sometimes with firecrackers). At the stroke of midnight on Dec 31 these effigies are set alight, usually with gasoline, and your old troubles are burned away. The resulting stench is horrible and soon the clouds of toxic smoke cover the city. Thankfully the upper level breezes tend to suck this poison away before too long.
