Description
MELT YOUR HEART with the children of Ecuador. November 3 is the official celebration of Independence in Cuenca and parties are everywhere.
This digitally altered artwork is derived from a photograph taken November 2/14 in the neighbouring barrio of Ciudadela Tomebamba in Cuenca, Ecuador, South America. Besides soccer games, etc, this event had this family contest with the greased pole. The object is for the family to work together to climb the pole to reach the gifts hanging above. The gifts were mostly food and fruit, but there were a few knick-knacks too. Usually the tower of people needed to be at least 3 high, maintaining balance, so the base person needed to be very strong and solid while family members made the climb. We bust a gut laughing at the expressions of pain as people step on shoulders, ears, noses and the like in their quest for the prizes. This is truly a fun event to watch.
