Description
I miss this gorgeous night view of these two landmarks which are a pleasure to behold, day or night. Todos Santos (All Saints) church and the Puente Roto (Broken Bridge) are part of the reason Cuenca is a World Heritage site.
El Puente Roto (The Broken Bridge), Cuenca, Ecuador. This bridge over the Tomebamba in Cuenca began contruction in 1849 and was destroyed by a terrible flood on 3 April 1960.
On Calle Larga, Iglesia de Todos los Santos, or Church of All of the Saints, sits next to the Tomebamba River. The original building was the first church in Cuenca, but as the building began to decay in the past century Cuenca began a process of restoration.
The first temple was built in 1557 by order of Rodrigo Núñez de Bonilla and in 1924 was replaced by a new one after the placement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the temple tower. The first Catholic mass was celebrated at the Todos Santos Church in 1540.
The Todos Santos complex is located in the heart of Cuenca, Ecuador, deep within the Tomebamba River Valley. It comprises the magnificent Church of Todos Santos (or the Church of All Saints), an adjacent nineteenth-century convent, a working garden, and small shops and eateries.
One of Cuenca’s historic crosses stands outside, one of several in the city.
Instead of rebuilding, or indeed demolishing, the remains of the bridge, it was left as it was and today is a popular place for young locals to hang out. You can walk across the remains of the bridge which is now more like a platform overlooking the river and indeed you can still pass under the remains of the bridge which has a road still running through one of its arches.
