Description
The El Vergel steeple with the 3 brass bells is one of my favourite subjects.
Iglesia El Vergel in Cuenca Ecuador is a locally well known, neocolonial landmark was originally a small chapel on the same site. The chapel was destroyed (the Spanish word used for this was arrasó, which means leveled) in the flood of 1950. This is the same flood that broke the Broken Bridge (puente roto) after which the present structure was built.
The church is located at what is roughly the edge of El Vergel, a neighborhood known for its iron workers. Many years ago, the city of Cuenca ended at about this point. The area beyond was largely open pasture, which was used by local caballeros to keep their horses. Blacksmiths and other iron workers naturally found it convenient to open shop there. Hence the prevalence of iron workshops in this area.
Iglesia El Vergel is located on 12 de Abril near the intersection with Huayna Capac.
