Description
The many vibrant green valleys and volcanic peaks can be viewed from the Pan-American Highway as one journeys on the way to Quito from the north, one of Ecuador’s most idyllic areas. There is something mesmerizing about peaks and valleys in the mist.
As we rounded a mountaintop, there was an area where they had re-routed the highway to a lower, safer area but the old highway was still evident going around the peak, so we drove up there. A family was busy digging for who-knows-what along the side of this old highway.
This small indigenous woman had gathered herself literally on her hands and feet and then crab-walked her way near to us. She seemed less than 4-feet tall and totally incapable of standing up straight. I motioned that I wanted to take her photo so she struck this lovely pose. Her brave smile melted our hearts and we gave her a little money in appreciation. Her family gave us a very friendly wave as we departed.
Taken April 5, 2010 on our return from Cotacachi to the capital, Quito, Ecuador.
