Description
The name Colegio refers to High Schools in Ecuador.
By resolution of the National Congress of 1910 a previous school started in 1858, first called "San Gregorio" then since re-named "San Luis" was re-named again "Colegio Nacional Benigno Malo" in honor to the illustrious Cuencano, Benigno Malo (1807-1870), a great Statesman, Diplomat, First Rector of the University of Cuenca, Writer, Senator for Azuay, Envoy Extraordinaire, Minister, Internationalist, Publicist, Journalist, Politician, among other titles.
On October 30, 1923, when Dr. Andrés F. Córdova was Rector, the new premises, designed and executed in the French neoclassical style by the Quito architect Luis Felipe Donoso Barba, began to be built on Avenida Solano. The architectural concept is of the French positivist model, which considers the educational institutes as temples of knowledge. This huge brick mass embodies the message of the power of reason. Crowned with domes, it allows nothing above it other than its own grandeur.
This digitally altered artwork is derived from my photograph taken April 2/10 in Cuenca, Ecuador, South America nestled in the Andes Mountains.
